ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Freshman
Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck/Mamaroneck) scored a pair of goals in Sunday's match as the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team defeated Hobart College, 3-1, to win the 2022 Mayor's Cup. Mancias Magana finished the tournament with three goals and an assist, earning the offensive MVP award; senior
Malcolm Swett (Riverhead/Riverhead) received the defensive MVP award. The win improves the Red Dragons to 4-0 on the season and drops the Statesmen to 2-1-1 overall. Â
"The Mayor's Cup is a big event for us, so it's a great feeling lifting that trophy," Head Coach
Iain Byrne stated. "Those are two great wins as St. Lawrence and Hobart will win a lot of games this year. Anytime you have a superstar striker like
Lucas Fecci (Somers/Somers) leading the line, you always have a chance, and its credit to him that he's improved on last season's Player of the Year performances."
Fecci was joined by classmate
Ian Zingaro (Liverpool/Liverpool), junior
John Bernardi (Mahopac/Mahopac), and freshman
Joesph Holder (Greenwood Lake/Warwick) on the All-Tournament team. Â
Oneonta struck early and fast, netting all three goals within the first 30 minutes of play. Approaching the 13th minute, senior
Ethan Brunell (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) sent in a corner kick that bounced off a Statesman defender and straight to Holder to score with a header. A few minutes later, Holder had another look at the net and was stopped by the goaltender, however Mancias Magana raced to the rebound and scored. In the 28th minute, Fecci brought the ball up the right side of the field and found senior
Arkadij Raiz (Oceanside/Oceanside). Raiz gave an immediate pass into the left side of the box to Mancias Magana who kicked it through the goalie's hands with the left boot for a three-goal lead.
Hobart eventually got on the board in the 67th minute with a goal after Ryan Luke dribbled up the right side of the field, into the box, and centered it to Robbie Caron for the score. The goal raised the physicality to an already aggressive match as the contest saw five yellow cards in the final 20 minutes, though the Red Dragons stayed focused on the main objective and won the Cup.
Senior
Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) finished with a save for Oneonta, while Guillermo Castaneda Chang played the first half for Holbart and tallied four saves, and Christian Burkhart played out the second finishing with a save. Â
The Red Dragons outshot the Statesmen, 13-8, and held the advantage in corners, 6-3. Â
Oneonta will travel for their next match on Friday for a 6:30 kickoff against Rensselaer. Â
