TROY, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team battled for 90 minutes and drew against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 1-1, Friday evening. The Red Dragons are now 4-0-1 in the season and the Engineers moved to 2-2-2 overall.
"It was a hard game and probably a fair result," said Head Coach
Iain Byrne. "We are creating chances which is encouraging."
After the two teams battled to a scoreless first half of play, senior
Lucas Fecci (Somers/Somers) scored his third goal of the season in the 58th minute. Senior
Ian Zingaro (Liverpool/Liverpool) gained possession behind midfield off an Engineer throw in and booted it down to Fecci. Fecci nutmegged his first defender, studder-stepped to create an opening against the second defender and hit the right upper 90 from outside the box.
In the 70th minute, RPI tied the game off the leg of Julio Rodriguez. Liam McDermott passed the ball out from inside the box to Joaquin Rodriguez up top. Rodriguez centered it for Rodriguez to give the game its final score.
Senior
Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) finished the game with five saves, while Luke Brezak also finished with five.
Oneonta out shot RPI 12-9, however the Engineers had the advantage in corners 4-1.
The Red Dragons are back in action Wednesday when the host in-city rival Hartwick at 4 pm.
