ONEONTA, N.Y.— A last-minute goal to close out the first half was the difference maker as the SUNY Oneonta field hockey team came up short against St. Lawrence, 1-0, Sunday afternoon. Following the outcome, Oneonta and St. Lawrence move to 1-1 on the season.
The Red Dragons had an opportunity to get on the board six minutes in. Senior
Morgan Fleming (Harpursville/Harpursville) stole the ball off a Saints' pass deep in the shooting circle however she could not get a clean shot off and was stopped by Lucy Adiutori. A minute later, St. Lawrence had a penalty corner and fired off back-to-back shots only to be stopped by senior
Jennifer Tumino (Carle Place/Carle Place).
The Saints controlled the ball for the second quarter, generating a few shots on goal, eventually breaking the tie in the closing seconds of the half. Maggie Green pushed the penalty corner up top to Carloine Hamilton for Hamilton to pass to Mayson Blondek. Blondek got it to Jenny L'Hommedi in front of the goal where L'Hommedi was initially stopped by Tumino but the rebound came right back to her and scored with nine seconds remaining. Â
Oneonta had a couple moments in the third for the equalizer. Five minutes into the quarter, the Red Dragons stole the ball and passed it into the circle for sophomore
Emilia Montgomery (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury). Montgomery got the ball past Adiutori but unfortunately hit the post. Junior
Erin Clark (Somers/Somers) had a chance towards the end of the quarter with a shot from the left side of the net but was padded away by Adiutori.
Tumino kept Oneonta's chances alive with time winding down. With 90 seconds left, Tumino faced and shut down a couple shots and a penalty stroke. Despite the key stops, the Red Dragons could not tie the game in the final seconds.
Tumino finished with a career-high 12 saves and Adiutori ended with four.
The Saints out shot the Red Dragons 18-8 and had a 12-7 advantage on penalty corners.
Oneonta is back in action Wednesday as they make the short travel to play in-town rival Hartwick at 5 pm. Â
