CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Two pivotal matches in doubles went in favor to the SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team as they defeated SUNYAC rival Cortland, 6-3, Thursday afternoon. Oneonta improved their record to 4-2 in the season and 2-1 in the SUNYAC while Cortland fell to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
Oneonta finished the doubles portion with a 2-1 lead though the two victories could have gone Cortland's way. On the No. 1 doubles court, junior
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) and senior
Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) faced off against Abby Madigan and Vyda Van Denburg. Holtermann and Karen were down 3-6 before they switched gears and took the next five games for an 8-6 win. Juniors
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) and
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) had a tough one on their hands as well on the No. 2 doubles court. Shaw and Schutte were down a break throughout the duration of the match until they tied and forced a tiebreaker. The pair took the tiebreaker 7-1 for an 8-7 victory.
Following their doubles wins, the four Red Dragons all won their respected singles match. Karen finished her match first on the No. 3 court with 6-1, 6-0 sets to give Oneonta a 3-1 match lead, but Cortland tied it up with wins on the five and six courts. Shaw continues her streak of no games dropped, defeating Van Denburg on the No. 4 court, 6-0, 6-0 and Schutte clinched the match with straight 6-1 sets against Diana Kozenyatko on the No. 2 singles court. Holtermann ended the contest with a win against Madigan on the No. 1 court, 6-2, 6-1.
Oneonta is back for more SUNYAC action when they host Oswego State on Saturday at 1 pm.
