ONEONTA, N.Y.-- Leading up to three conference matches next week, the SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team defeated Oswego State, 8-1, Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons are now 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the SUNYAC, while the Lakers fell to 1-7 in the season and 1-5 in the conference.Â
The Red Dragons took care of business and swept the doubles matches in less than an hour. Senior
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) and junior
Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) bageled the Lakers No. 1 doubles team, 8-0. Juniors
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) and
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) defeated Jenna Wilson and Cara Campanie on the No. 2 court 8-1, and senior
Jessica Harris (Cobleskill/Academy of Holy Names) and junior
Madelyn Brophy (Greenwich/Greenwich Central) won on the No. 3 court, 8-2. Â
Oneonta kept the pace in the singles portion, winning five of the six matches. Karen finished first on the No. 3 singles court with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Wilson. Holtermann clinched the match for the Red Dragons with a 6-1, 6-0 victory on the No. 1 singles court. Â
Junior
Illana Ger (Levittown/MacArthur) recorded her first collegiate start and victory on the No. 6 singles court over Debora Win, 6-2, 6-1. Schutte won on the No. 2 singles court, 6-0, 6-4, while Shaw walked off the No. 4 court with a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Â
The Red Dragons are back in action Thursday against Fredonia at 9 am to kick off their three-day conference play at the Binghamton Tennis Center. Â
