BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team was swept 3-0 by Brockport on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons fall to 4-7 overall and 0-3 in the conference, while the Golden Eagles move to 11-3 and 2-0 in the SUNYAC.Â
With the first set tied 4-4, junior Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) tallied a kill to give Oneonta a 5-4 lead. Brockport took the following four points behind two kills from Alenna Williamson and a Kerri McHale ace. An Annalisa Alicea (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) service ace followed a kill by junior Caitlin Christie (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) to cut the Brockport lead to 9-8. Three unanswered Golden Eagle points pushed the advantage to four as Brockport maintained its lead. A pair of Brockport errors and then two straight aces by Clara Culeton (Oswego, NY/Oswego) tied at 15-15. Brockport responded with an 8-0 span that was too much to overcome as the Golden Eagles won 25-17.
Brockport carried over its run from the first set to go ahead 9-0 in the second. Another strong span pushed the Golden Eagles up 20-5, and the lead was never in doubt.Â
The Red Dragons used two kills from Culeton to go ahead 8-6 in the third set. Brockport tied 9-9 following two kills by Andrea Coyle. The teams traded points with six ties until 16-16. Jordan Thompson and Alexis Sison knocked in kills to push the lead to two, but Christie hit a kill to make it 18-17. Brockport led 24-18 before a 4-0 run with kills by Gianna May (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) and Casey Biggers (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East), and a Kayla Rende (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) ace cut it to 24-22. A final Oneonta service error gave Brockport the match point.Â
Culeton led the team with eight kills, three aces, and one block. Biggers added six kills and a block. Rende finished with 15 assists, while Anna Moller (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach Senior) grabbed ten digs.Â
Oneonta continues its long road trip by playing Plattsburgh on Fri. Sept. 30 at 6 p.m.
