Women's Tennis topples Farmingdale

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- Coming off less than a full day's rest, the SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team went on the road and defeated Farmingdale 8-1, Saturday afternoon. Seniors Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) and Jessica Harris (Cobleskill/Academy of Holy Names), and junior Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) ran the number three, four, and five singles courts, dropping only three games combined. The Red Dragons improved to 3-2 overall, while the Rams dropped to 4-3 in the season.

Oneonta came out ready and it showed, taking all three doubles matches. Karen paired up with Junior Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) on the No. 1 doubles court to face Anastasia Hoffman and Lien Collings. Collings and Hoffman put up a fight, however it was Karen and Holtermann that came out on top, 8-6. Shaw and junior Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) handled their counterparts on the No. 2 doubles court, 8-2, and Harris and freshman Danielle Copp (Marcellus/Marcellus) chalked up the win on the No. 3 court, 8-4.

With a three-match lead after doubles, Harris, Karen, and Shaw led the Red Dragons in the singles matches. On the No. 3 court, Karen beat Collings in straight 6-1 sets. For the second straight singles match, Shaw defeated her opponent in double bagel fashion, 6-0, 6-0 on the No. 4 court. Harris, who had a bagel set, won her third straight singles match, 6-1, 6-0 on the No. 5 court over Heather McGullam.

Schutte took the first set swiftly on the No. 2 singles court, 6-1, before a challenging 7-5 second set victory. On the No. 6 singles court, Copp found her stride and won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.

The Red Dragons are back in action Wednesday for a SUNYAC match on the road against Cortland at 3 pm.
