Women's Tennis cruises past Houghton

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The cool air and wind were not a factor for the SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team as they defeated Houghton 8-1, Friday afternoon. After falling in the first doubles match, the Red Dragons won out the rest of the day and improved to 2-2 on the season while the Highlanders fell to 3-3 overall.

Juniors Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) and Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) beat Alexandria Leary and Marilynn Amborski on the No. 2 doubles court, 8-3. Senior Jessica Harris (Cobleskill/Academy of Holy Names) and freshman Danielle Copp (Marcellus/Marcellus) teamed up and ran the No. 3 doubles court for an 8-4 victory.

With a 2-1 match lead, Oneonta kept it going and swept the singles matches. Shaw and Copp finished their matches quickly. Shaw won on the No. 4 court double bagel style 6-0, 6-0, and Copp secured the victory on the No. 6 court, 6-1, 6-4. Junior Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) had a tougher match than what the box score shows but won the No. 1 singles in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Schutte won her first set 6-1 over Chloe Esch on the No. 2 singles court. Esch did not go away as quietly in the second set, however Schutte came out on top 7-5.

Harris and senior Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) faced some adversity in their respected singles matches. On the No. 5 singles court, Harris fell 6-1 in the first set before taking the second set 6-3. The first set was in the review mirror for Harris as she took the third set 6-1. Karen had an identical match, dropping the first set 6-1 in the No. 3 singles match. Immediately Karen bounced back in set two with a 6-1 win before taking the third set 6-4.

The Red Dragons are back in action tomorrow as they travel to face Farmingdale at noon.
