Oneonta, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team opened the 2022 season against a reloaded Hartwick squad Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons were unable to get into a rhythm and lost to the Hawks, 9-0.
In doubles play, the No. 2 team of juniors
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) and Sophie Schutte held the lead for the beginning of the match until Phoebe Olson and Ryann Ashby created a spark and won 8-5. The No. 3 doubles team of senior
Jessica Harris (Cobleskill/Academy of Holy Names) and freshman
Danielle Copp () were defeated 8-4 and the No. 1 doubles duo of senior
Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) and junior
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) lost 8-1.
Following the doubles match, Holtermann and Karen battled hard in their respected No. 1 and No. 3 singles matches as both forced a tiebreaker set. After losing the first set 6-1, Holtermann clawed back and won the second set 7-6, before losing in the tiebreaker 10-8. For Karen, after going down 6-3 in the first set, she won the second set 6-3 to force a tiebreaker though unfortunately lost 10-8. On the No. 4 singles court, Harris had a hard-fought battle but lost straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
The Red Dragons return to action Saturday, September 10, as they travel to Plattsburgh for a conference match at 1 pm.
