PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team showed why they are the defending conference champions as they defeated Plattsburgh in the SUNYAC conference opener, 8-1, Saturday afternoon. The victory improves the Red Dragons to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in SUNYAC, while the Cardinals drop to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in conference.
Oneonta came out strong and didn't look back, taking all three doubles matches. The No. 1 duo team, junior
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) and senior
Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) swiftly defeated their counterpart 8-1. The junior duo of
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) and
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) ran the No. 2 doubles court and beat their opponents 8-3. Junior
Madelyn Brophy (Greenwich/Greenwich Central) and freshman
Danielle Copp (Marcellus/Marcellus) were in for a challenge on the No. 3 doubles court. Brophy and Copp battled with the Svantner sisters, Nicole and Samantha, who forced a tiebreaker, but it was the Red Dragons that came out on top, 8-7 (7-3).
Heading into the singles play with a three-match lead, Oneonta kept their foot on the gas and won five of six singles. Holtermann won the No. 1 singles with straight 6-1 sets, and Karen won the No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-1, officially giving the Red Dragons the victory. Finishing out their matches, Schutte won at the No. 2 singles court comfortably 6-1, 6-2, while Shaw handed out a bagel on the No. 4 court in her win, 6-0, 6-4. Brophy and Copp had another battle after their doubles match as both went into a super tiebreaker in singles. Brophy came up just short on the No. 5 court 6-1, 4-6, 5-10, however Copp who forced the tiebreaker in her match won 2-6, 6-3, 10-7.
Oneonta is back in action conference action Wednesday as they host New Paltz at 3 pm.
