ONEONTA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team was defeated in their season home opener by SUNY New Paltz, 8-1, Wednesday afternoon. The result drops the Red Dragons to 1-2 in the season and 1-1 in SUNYAC and moves the Hawks to 1-0 in season and conference play.
New Paltz found their stride early in the doubles matches, winning each of them by multiple games. Oneonta senior
Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) and junior
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) kept their match the closest on the No. 1 doubles court but came up short in the end, 8-5.
The Hawks went on to take five of the six singles matches. Senior
Jessica Harris (Cobleskill/Academy of Holy Names) was the lone victory for the Red Dragons. Harris won in straight sets on the No. 6 singles court over Lillian Nowak, 6-4, 6-2. Junior
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) put up a battle on the No. 4 court. After a 6-4 first set loss, Shaw trailed 4-5 in set two before taking the next two games for a 6-5 lead. Her counterpart Loretta Donovan tied the set at six to force and eventually win the tiebreaker, 7-3.
Oneonta is back in action Friday, September 23, when they host Houghton at 4 pm.
