SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- After knotting the game late in the fourth quarter, the SUNY Oneonta field hockey team fell in a double overtime thriller to Union College 2-1, Wednesday evening. The Red Dragons are now 1-4 in the season while the Dutchwomen are 4-0.
Senior
Jennifer Tumino (Carle Place/Carle Place) saw most of the first half action. Tumino saved the lone shot attempt in the first quarter, then tallied another three in the second to keep the game scoreless.
Union got on the scoreboard in the late third. Following a saved shot from Tumino, Dutchwoman Grace Goddard got the rebound, shot from the right wing, and was tipped in by Emily Dawson.
Oneonta had a couple waves of offensive attacks come in the fourth. With 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Red Dragons had multiple corner opportunities that led to a few shots, however those were blocked, saved, and had one that hit the post. A few minutes later the second offensive wave hit and scored to tie the game. After a corner was pushed in, junior
Erin Clark (Somers/Somers) took a shot on goal from the left wing but was kick saved away. Two sticks went after the rebound and bounced the ball to a waiting senior
Carly Waszczak (Northport/Northport) to score on the left side, forcing the game into overtime.
In the second period of overtime, Union took the game when Jill Bove raced to the ball at the left wing, dribbled in, and got past Tumino on the right side of the net.
Tumino finished with 10 saves, and senior
Victoria Pixley (Carmel/Carmel) finished with a defensive save. Sophie Brady had five saves for Union.
The Dutchwomen outshot the Red Dragons 19-11 while Oneonta had the edge in corners, 9-7.
The Red Dragons are back in action Saturday, September 24, when they host Stockton at 11 am.
