Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women's Tennis win streak halted at eight; Lose to New Paltz 6-3

New Paltz, NY - The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team had its eight-match winning streak halted at eight by its nemesis The SUNY New Paltz Hawks.  The New Paltz squad seem to just get the better of the Red Dragons and today was no different in a very close contest with a 6-3 outcome in The Hawks favor.

The doubles held to a close billing and the lone Red Dragon win came at number three as sophomores Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) and Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) won in a very close match by just a service break 8-6.  The number two tandem of seniors Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) and Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) lost in a very close match also by just a service break. This left the Red Dragon women down 2-1 needing four singles matches to take the dual competition.

Singles was close as expected as these two rivals slugged it out on all courts.  Wins for Oneonta came from junior Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) winning in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 in the fifth posititon and Holtermann who was dominant getting a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at the sixth spot.  A three-set dual occurred at the number two position as senior Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) lost the first set and then came back to tie the contest 6-3, but Carswell ran out of gas and settled for a three-set setback losing the final set 6-0.

The Red Dragon women's tennis team are now 15-6 on the year and now have to face Union College on Tuesday, April 26th as the they prepare for the SUNYAC Championships next week as the number two seed.  The Union College match up first and that contest will take place beginning at 4:00 PM at Union College in Schenectady, NY.
