Binghamton, NY - The SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons Women's Tennis have done something magical. They have made history by gaining their fourth consecutive SUNYAC final. They did so by completely shutting down the SUNY Geneseo Knights 5-0.
The women's tennis team from SUNY Oneonta were locked in some duals on all three-doubles courts and prevailed coming through in all tight spots. The number one team of junior
Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) and senior
Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) went down a break of serve late in the match behind 5-6. Then they got the break of serve back and never looked behind in winning the last three-games taking an all-important first doubles win 8-6. The second tandem of seniors
Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) and
Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) were never in any trouble and absolutely dominant going onto victory 8-2. The third duo of sophomores
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) and
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) stormed ahead 3-0 and then lost the next four games going down 3-4. They got their composure back and won the next five-games tallying an 8-4 win and an almost impossible hill for the SUNY Geneseo Knights to climb out of.
There was no comeback from the Knights to be had today as Oneonta put the hammer down and clinched the 5-0 win. Fraser in the top spot was absolutely flawless reporting in a 6-0, 6-0 double bagel performance. Number two Carswell then followed up on her number one teammates performance not dropping a game ahead 6-0, 2-0 when play was halted. Macdonald was ahead 6-5 in the fourth spot when play came to an end. Karen was in complete command of her match when she recorded a 6-0, 2-1 score before the match was stalled. Securing the Red Dragons win today was Holtermann who was in control from the get go recording the 6-2, 6-0 lopsided win. It was Holtermann's victory that clinched the insurmountable fifth point for Oneonta and punched ticket to the finals for the fourth consecutive season.
Up next is the SUNY Oneonta's nemsis the SUNY New Paltz Hawks who up to this point have not lost to the Red Dragons in each of the three proceeding final matchups. The Red Dragons are hoping that the fourth time is the charm as they try to overtake the Hawks in the championships on Saturday, April 30th beginning at 1:00 PM at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
