Ithaca, NY - Women's tennis battled Ithaca college in a hotly contested affair only to drop the dual match 7-2. Highlights for the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons was a terrific match at number three-doubles when sophomores
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) and
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) were dominant outsteadying their opponents and salvaging the doubles stanza 8-2.
Going into singles the Red Dragons were in striking distance and looked as though this was going to be a long afternoon of tennis which proved to be the case. Highlighting the women's singles was an impressive win from junior
Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) displaying solid groundstrokes on route to a number five singles triumph 6-2, 2-6 (10-5).
Also noteworthy was a long match from Schutte who lost in a very long first set tiebreaker losing the fourth position 7-6, 6-1. Senior
Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) also played a great first set losing 7-6 and then bowing out 6-0 in the number two flight. Senior
Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) perhaps played the most competitive match on the day when she lost the first set 6-0 and fought back taking the second set 7-6 in a display of strategic tennis and mental toughness. Fighting back probably took a little too much out of Fraser when she stubbornly succumbed in the super tiebreaker 10-4 in first singles.
The Red Dragons have little time to get settled as they quickly go back on the road to face William Smith College on Sunday, March 6th with the match time beginning at 3 PM.
