Geneva, NY - The SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons women's tennis team came within a whisker of upsetting the William Smith College Herrons on their home turf dropping a heartbreaking but impressive dual match 5-4.
The Red Dragons got on the board with an impressive 8-1 win from sophomore's
Julia Holtermann (Staten Island/Curtis) and
Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) at the third doubles position when they overwhelmed their foes with an 8-1 win. This win placed Oneonta within striking distance of a possible win over William Smith.
The highlights for the Red Dragon women were wins at the four, five and sixth singles positions respectively. Senior
Rebecca Macdonald (Brooklyn/Leon M. Goldstein) was dominant today toppling her opponent with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Junior
Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) had to play a lot of long rallies but outlasted her opponent 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore
Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) played very clean and meticulous tennis dismantling her opponent 6-1, 6-1. Schutte in the third spot in perhaps the most entertaining match on the afternoon split sets before Schutte had to settle for a setback in the super tiebreaker the score was 5-7, 6-1 (2-10). Oneonta came up just one individual match of beating a William Smith squad that is always a top tier team in the powerful Liberty League.
The women's tennis team drop now to 7-5 on the 2021/22 season. They take a few weeks off before switching to outdoor practices and a challenging April schedule with six conference matches and another Liberty League opponent that will first take place on Tuesday, April 5th against RIT beginning at 4:00 PM in Rochester, NY.
