The SUNY Oneonta wrestling team wrapped up the season with a 13th place finish at the Mideast Regionals at Elizabethtown this weekend. The Red Dragons had senior
Steven Bilali (Eastchester/Eastchester) (184), and juniors
Michael Blando (Massapequa/Massapequa) (141) and
Jhordyn Innocent (Spring Valley/Ramapo) (197) earn All-Region honors. Â
The Inside Story
Bilali started the tournament with a 9-3 decision win over Grant Walnoha of Johns Hopkins University. Bilali suffered a setback in the second round to Ithaca's Chibueze Chukwuezi via pinfall at 2:32. In the first consolation round, he had five takedowns and won an 11-7 decision against University of Pittsburgh at Bradford's Nathan Powley. Bilali was then pinned by Gary Nagle from Ursinus College's, in 1:50. Bilali earned a seventh-place finish with a 5:40 pin over Johns Hopkins University Grant Walnoha.Â
Blando opened the tournament with a 1:53 pinfall victory over Joe McKneely, from McDaniel College. Blando lost the second round in a 16-0 tech fall against Domenic Difrancescanton, from The College of New Jersey. In the consolation bracket, Blando started strong and defeated his first two opponents via pinfall. He pinned University of Scranton's Brandon Judge first in 2:16, then he pinned RIT's Chris Horton in 2:17. In the consolation semifinal, Blando lost 24-8 tech fall to Xavier Pena from Centenary University. Blando ended the season losing the fifth-place bout to Pennsylvania College of Technology's Noah Hunt via pinfall at 3:39.
Innocent defeated Brockport's Nick Franco in the first round with a 10-5 decision. Similar to Bilali and Blando, Innocent suffered a setback in the second round after losing a 7-3 decision to Muhlenberg's Luca Colestock. In the first consolation match, Innocent pinned Cortland's Roman Jellick in 4:09. The following match, Innocent recorded two four-point near falls and was up 12-3 through the first two periods against Ursinus College's Jason Carter. In the third period Carter got a couple takedowns and pinned Innocent at 6:11. Innocent lost the seventh-place match, in a 7-5 decision against Centenary University's Keevon Berry.Â
