FREDONIA, N.Y. -Â The Oneonta men's basketball team rolled to a 74-62 victory over Fredonia to complete a weekend SUNYAC sweep on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons only trailed once and move to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the SUNYAC. The Blue Devils fall to 0-13 and 0-6 in the conference.
"I thought our effort was great in the first half and inconsistent in the second half," stated head coach Cameron Conover. "We are happy with the result, although we all know we have a lot of work to do moving forward."Â
Fredonia's Jacob Hougan scored the opening basket, proving to be the Blue Devil's only lead of the day. Senior Daniel Derice (Tampa, FL/Wesley Chapel) answered with an inside score that began an 8-0 run until 14:56. Senior Joseph Bull (Bronx, NY/Mount St. Michael Academy) pushed the Red Dragons' lead to 10-4 following a mid-range jump shot, but Fredonia's AJ Knight responded with a triple to cut the lead to three. The Blue Devils kept the game close before baskets from Caleb Brown (Brooklyn, NY/Uncommon Charter) and Tyler Harts (Queens, NY/Sewanaka) pushed it to 16-9. Brown scored after a Derice layup to give Oneonta a 22-12 lead at 7:38. Bull scored four points within a 6-0 Red Dragons' run to make it a 13-point game as the Oneonta defense controlled the paint.Â
Baskets from Fredonia's Aaron Collins and Hougan cut the lead to 35-23, but a three-point by Frankie Williams (Bronx, NY/Fannie Lou) with 19 seconds left made it 39-23 heading into the break.
Oneonta maintained its double-digit lead throughout the second half and took an 18-point lead when Bull drained a three-pointer at 10:48. Sophomore Graham Wooden (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) converted inside to push the Red Dragons' advantage to 60-42. Fredonia responded with an 8-4 span to lessen the lead to 64-50. Derice broke the streak with a layup, but the Blue Devils used a 10-0 run capped off by a Marquis Tubman layup at 2:45. Michael Ortale Jr. (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem Central) finally got the Red Dragons' offense moving again with an inside layup to make it 69-60. Bull picked up another jumper at 1:27 to put the score back to a double-digit lead, and then Fredonia was forced to foul. Williams drained a pair, and Bull hit another as Oneonta secured the win.Â
Bull led the Red Dragons with 20 points and had nine rebounds. Brown recorded a double-double with 14 points and ten boards. Derice scored 16 points, while Ortale finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Collins topped Fredonia with 20 points and five assists, while Houagan scored ten.Â
Oneonta returns to action on Sat. Dec. 17 to face Division I Binghamton at 2 p.m. on the road.Â
