LA PLUME, N.Y. -Â Senior Joseph Bull (Bronx, NY/Mount St. Michael Academy) recorded a career night, going off with 24 points, 22 rebounds, and eight assists in an 82-67 non-conference victory at Keystone. The Red Dragons move to 4-0 with the win, while the Giants fall to 1-3.
"Tonight was a gritty win. We didn't shoot the ball great, but we played hard and dominated the boards," head coach Cameron Conover stated. "Keystone is a talented team, and we made them work for every basket."
Keystone opened on a 5-0 run behind a triple from Daivel Jackson and a mid-range jumper by Javen Flowers-Smith. Bull found senior Daniel Derice (Tampa, FL/Wesley Chapel) for an open layup to break the streak, but another Keystone jump shot put the Giants ahead 7-2. Sophomore Graham Wooden (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) picked up senior Micahel Ortale Jr. beyond the arc, and then Ortale stole the ball the following possession to give Wooden the fastbreak score to tie.Â
Both sides traded leads until sophomore Caleb Brown (Brooklyn, NY/Uncommon Charter)Â scored inside to give Oneonta a 19-18 lead at 12:16. Ortale and Bull scored to push the advantage to five, and then first-year Elijah Castillo (Bronx, NY/St. Raymonds) drained a trey at 10:08 to make it 26-20. The Giants kept the game within single digits and cut the lead to 32-28 behind a Nate Shepard jump shot at 3:38. First-year Delano Knox (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) and Ortale scored back-to-back, and Bull netted an inside basket at 1:32 to put Oneonta up by eight. Derice scored once more before Keystone's Flowers-Smith sank a triple with 32 seconds left to make it 40-33 at the half.Â
After another three-pointer from Flowers-Smith, Bull scored two consecutive layups before an Ortale triple. Keystone hit a three at 15:02, but the Red Dragons responded with an 8-0 run comprised of four points from Bull and Derice. Threes from first-year Tyler Harts (Queens, NY/Sewanaka) and sophomore Ryan Teaney (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) pushed the lead to 63-51. A couple of late fouls allowed the Giants to capitalize on the free throw line, as Keystone cut the lead to 69-65 with 4:32 remaining. Bull scored six points in a 10-0 Oneonta run, and a pair of Wooden free throws gave Oneonta a 15-point lead and the eventual win.Â
Of Bull's 22 rebounds, 12 were offensive boards. Derice finished with 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting and added nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Ortale netted 14 points with eight boards and five assists.Â
The Red Dragons outrebounded the Giants 57-34, and Oneonta's 32 offensive boards tied the program record.Â
"Our guys gave great effort, and I was pleased with our 22 assists to only three turnovers," said Conover.Â
Flowers-Smith led all scorers with 30 points, while Jackson added 12 and 15 rebounds.Â
Oneonta goes on a short break before hosting New Paltz in the SUNYAC opener on Tue. Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in Dewar Arena.Â
