Women's Tennis Clinch Two Seed in SUNYAC Playoffs with Win over Geneseo

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team wrapped up the final day at the Binghamton Tennis Center with a 6-3 victory over Geneseo, Saturday afternoon. The win puts the Red Dragons to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in conference and clinched them as the two seed in the SUNYAC tournament in April.

Oneonta had two doubles teams win their match without dropping a game. Senior Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) and freshman Danielle Copp (Marcellus/Marcellus) defeated Abigail Rockwood and Julia Paolino 8-0 on the No. 2 doubles court and senior Jessica Harris (Cobleskill/Academy of Holy Names) and junior Madelyn Brophy (Greenwich/Greenwich Central) won against Julia Kimmel and Katie Kujawa on the No. 3 court, 8-0.

In the singles matches, Copp gave Oneonta a 3-1 match lead with a double bagel victory on the No. 6 court over Kimmel. Karen won on the No. 3 court with straight 6-1 sets and junior Brianna Shaw (Staten Island/Curtis) came out on top over Kylie Seiler on the No. 2 court 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the match.

Brophy and junior Sophia Schutte (Great Neck/Great Neck) went into super tiebreaker sets in their matches. On the No. 5 court, Brophy took the first set over Kujawa, 6-4. After a tough 1-6 second set, Brophy gathered her composure and won the super tiebreaker 10-5. Schutte was neck and neck early in the first set of the No. 1 court until Alex Galle won 6-3. Schutte forced the tiebreaker with a 6-4 second set and battled in the super tiebreaker but came up short 9-11.

The Red Dragons are back in action on Thursday when they travel to take on Pratt University at 5 pm.
