BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- The 16th nationally ranked SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team could not get one past the Brockport keeper, as they dropped a 2-0 road contest Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons are now 7-2-2 in the season and 2-2-1 in the SUNYAC while the Golden Eagles are now 8-1-4 overall and 6-0 in the conference.
"It's a disappointing day," Head Coach
Iain Byrne stated. "We played well enough between the boxes, but the goals have dried up and there's a softness to us at the back."
Brockport scored their first goal in the 54th minute off a corner kick. Alex Rivara kicked in the corner to the far side of the six-yard box to Max Voyer who headed the ball in over senior
Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker).
The Golden Eagles netted their second goal in the 71st minute when Matthew Stefaniw stole a pass from the Red Dragons backline 30 yards out. Stefaniw brought it in front of the net for a shot that was saved by Hanna, but the rebound went right towards Giovanni Cardona for the goal.
In the remaining 20 minutes, Oneonta had a few shot attempts from freshman
Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), sophomore
Derek Marques (Somers, N.Y./Somers) and senior
Lucas Fecci (Somers, N.Y./Somers), but none of them beat Andrew Taylor.
Taylor finished with five saves for Brockport while Hanna ended with four.
The Red Dragons outshot the Golden Eagles 14-10 and only had three corners to Brockport's seven.
Oneonta is back in action Wednesday when they travel north to face Plattsburgh State at 4 pm.
