PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Senior
Ethan Brunell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) found freshman
Milton Mancias Magana (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) in the 60th minute for the lone goal in the SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team's 1-0 victory over Plattsburgh State, Wednesday afternoon. The win improved the Red Dragons to 8-2-2 overall and 3-2-1 in SUNYAC play while the Cardinals are now 6-5-2 in the season and 2-3-2 in the conference. Â
Today's victory was also Head Coach
Iain Byrne's career 247th win which is now the most wins in men's soccer program history. Byrne surpassed Garth Stam with a record of 247-85-46 and counting. Â
"We had Hanna to thank in the first half as he made a few big saves," said Byrne. "We were far better in the second and managed to get ahead and then hold on for the win."Â
Senior
Nate Hanna (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made one of his big saves in the first minute of play when John Hayes had a clear shot 10 yards out and kicked it right at Hanna. The Cardinals had a two-on-one chance in the 16th minute where Brian Coughlan took a shot just inside the penalty box but was saved by a charging Hanna. Before halftime, Plattsburgh's Dylan Shalvey led a pass into the box for Cole Weiner. Weiner was one-on-one with Hanna eight yards out and could not beat him as he saved it sitting down with his foot.Â
The Red Dragons got the offense going in the second half and in the 60th minute scored. Mancias Magana brought it down the side of the field and passed it across the penalty box to
Jeremy Pantoni (Goshen, N.Y./Goshen). Pantoni passed it into the box to Brunell who centered the ball back to Mancias Magana for his sixth goal of the season. Â
Hanna finished with three saves as Teddy Healy saved two for Plattsburgh.Â
The Red Dragons outshot the Cardinals 12-7 and had a 6-4 corner kick advantage. Â
Oneonta is back in action Saturday when they host Oswego State at 1 pm. Â
