Red Dragons Split on Senior Day

Rende Surpasses 1,000 Career Assists

ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta women's volleyball team closed out the season going 1-1 at the Dig Pink Invitational. The Red Dragons first opened with a 3-0 sweep over Baruch and then fell 3-1 to Hartwick. Oneonta finishes the season at 11-14 overall.

The Red Dragons picked up a comfortable three-set victory over the Bearcats in the opening match. Oneonta won 25-17, 25-20, and 25-18. After Baruch went ahead 10-8 in the first set, a block from Kayla Rende (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) and Ashanti Davis (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) spurred a 5-0 run with two Carsyn Rachuta (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) service aces. An error broke the streak, but a 6-0 Oneonta run comprised of three Red Dragon blocks pushed the lead to 20-12. Oneonta continued to hold its lead, and Rende snuck in a kill to make it 24-16 before finally taking the set.

The second set started close before Isabella Fabrizio (Highland Mills, NY/Cornwall), and Davis sent in kills before two straight aces by Annalisa Alicea (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) put Oneonta up 12-6. The Bearcats eventually cut the advantage to 20-18 following a kill from Anesa Feratovic, but Clara Culeton (Oswego, NY/Oswego) answered with a kill to make it 22-18. Baruch took the following two points before Oneonta closed out on a 3-0 run with kills by Culeton and Caitlin Christie (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore).

The Bearcats tied 5-5 in the third before the Red Dragons scored five of the following six points. A block by Casey Biggers (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) and Davis made it 12-7, and another block from Biggers and Culeton pushed it to 15-10. A 3-0 run finished with a Davis block, Culeton ace made it 23-14, and Oneonta finally completed the sweep with a set-winning kill from Fabrizio.
Culeton led Oneonta with 12 kills and five blocks, while Biggers added nine kills, three aces, and 14 digs. Rende dished out 29 assists, while Rachuta had 14 digs.

Despite falling 3-1 to Hartwick, each set remained competitive, with three of them decided by three or fewer points. Hartwick won the first 29-27 before Oneonta bounced back with a 25-22 win. The Hawks took the next two 25-14 and 25-23.

A 5-0 run with two Biggers' aces gave Oneonta a 6-2 lead, but Hartwick responded with a 4-0 span to tie. Both sides traded points until kills from Culeton and Fabrizio made it 16-13. Once again, the Hawks tied, with neither team pulling away. Christie gave the Red Dragons a 26-25 lead following a kill, and then Davis tied 27-27 with another kill. Hartwick took the final two points.

Oneonta used a 6-0 midway through the second set to go ahead 20-14, and then kills by Davis and Culeton made it 22-16. The Hawks cut the lead to two before Culeton sent in the set-winning kill.

The Red Dragons struggled in the third set and fell behind early. A 3-0 run with kills by Christie and Culeton made it 18-11, but the Hawks scored five of the final six points to lead 2-1.
Oneonta battled in the fourth to take a 14-13 lead following a block by Rende and Davis. Two consecutive Biggers' kills gave the Red Dragons a two-point lead, but Hartwick answered with a 3-0 run to go up again. Six ties followed until a Hartwick error made it 23-23. The Hawks then sealed the win with the following two points.

Culeton led Oneonta with 17 kills and three blocks, while Biggers added 14 kills, 18 digs, and three aces. Davis recorded ten kills, and Rachuta had 17 digs. Rende surpassed the 1,000 career assists mark and had 44 in the match.

Before the match, Oneonta honored its four seniors in Rachuta, Biggers, Rende, and Alexandra Parillo (Oakdale, NY/Connetquot). Parillo went on to finish the day with 11 digs.
