Claire Mahoney (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) assisted seniors
Carly Waszczak (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and
Morgan Fleming (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville) for a couple scores, but the SUNY Oneonta Field Hockey team could not find the equalizer and fell to Skidmore on the road, 2-3, Wednesday afternoon. Following the non-conference match, the Red Dragons are now 5-8 in the season while the Thoroughbreds improved to 9-7 overall.
Senior
Jennifer Tumino (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) was pressured early and saved three shots within the first three and a half minutes. Tumino tallied a fourth to keep the game scoreless after the first period.
Skidmore's Tobi Dolan scored the first goal early in the second period off a penalty corner and was assisted by Carrie Hughes.
Coming out of halftime, the Thoroughbreds settled themselves in the attack zone and generated five penalty corner chances. On the fifth corner, CC Wetter hit the back of the cage off the assist from Kayla Hassett. With almost a minute before the third period ended, Wetter hit her second goal off a rebound.
The Red Dragons got their first goal four minutes into the fourth. After pushing in the penalty corner, Waszczak got in front of the cage to tip in the ball from Mahoney. Mahoney recorded her second assist of the day when Fleming scored her third goal of the season with seven minutes left.
Tumino finished the game with nine saves, while Thoroughbreds' Victoria Bodnar did not record a save.
Skidmore outshot Oneonta 16-2 and had a 14-3 advantage on penalty corners.
The Red Dragons are back in action Saturday when they travel to face Brockport at 12 pm.
