BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Junior
Michaela Maniscalco (Northport, N.Y./Northport) found classmate
Carly O'Connor (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) in the third period for her first collegiate goal as the SUNY Oneonta field hockey team defeated Brockport 1-0, clinching a spot in the SUNYAC playoffs, Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 6-8 on the season and 3-2 in the conference, while the Golden Eagles fell to 9-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play. Â
Halfway through the second period, O'Connor and senior
Carly Waszczak (Northport, N.Y./Northport) registered back-to-back shots at the cage but were stopped by Ella Buchanan. With four minutes remaining in the first half, Brockport's Emmalee Moore took a shot that went off senior keeper
Jennifer Tumino's (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) foot and was heading into the net before it was defensively saved by Waszczak. Â
The Red Dragons finally struck with four minutes remaining in the third period. Waszczak took the penalty corner and pushed it up to senior
Claire Mahoney (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River). Mahoney took a shot from the top of the arc only to be saved by Buchanan. The rebound went to Maniscalco who pushed it down near the right side of the cage to O'Connor for the game-winner. Â
Tumino faced a few shots throughout the game and finished with four saves for her second career shutout. Buchanan ended with three saves.
Brockport outshot Oneonta 10-6 and had a slight advantage on penalty corners, 7-6. Â
The number three and four seeds for the SUNYAC playoffs will be determined Wednesday as the Red Dragons host New Paltz at 4 pm.
