Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field hockey falls at home to Skidmore

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team was defeated tonight at home by the Skidmore Thoroughbreds 7-2.  The loss for Oneonta dropped them to 2-10 overall while Skidmore leaves town 7-9.

The Inside Story
The Thoroughbreds got off to a quick start scoring a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes of the contest.  Scoring first for Skidmore was senior Mariah Redler who took it herself into the circle before getting off a shot that found the inside of the near post.  Two minutes later, freshman Kayla Hassett steered a shot to the back of the goal off an assist from junior Carrie Hughes.

Skidmore continued its pressure in the second quarter pushing its advantage to 5-0 midway through the stanza.  Redler tallied twice more, and freshman CC Wetter added a goal during the run.  Hughes added a pair of assists to give her three for the night.

The Red Dragons broke through in the 26th minute on a goal by senior Emily Raymond (Deposit/Deposit).  Raymond received a pass from classmate Alexa Ryan (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) on a penalty corner before blasting a shot by the Skidmore goalie.

Senior Jenna Dangler (Nyack/Nyack) tallied midway through the third quarter to bring Oneonta to within three goals.  The Thoroughbreds answered with less than a minute to go in the third quarter to push its lead to 6-2 entering the final period.

Senior Carolyn Blackman converted a penalty stroke to cap the scoring for Skidmore in the 58th minute.

Just the Stats
Skidmore outshot Oneonta 27-12 in the contest including 12-2 in the fourth quarter.  Oneonta goalies Kristy Campana (Melville/Walt Whitman) and Jennifer Tumino (Carle Place/Carle Place) each played a half and combined to make nine saves.  Skidmore goalie Jess Gaetgens recorded six saves.

What's Next
Oneonta will host Oswego this Saturday in a game that has playoff implications for both squads.  Oswego currently stands one game ahead of Oneonta for the final conference tournament spot and a win on Saturday just might secure that spot.  The game is scheduled for a noon start.
