Field Hockey clips Pioneers

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 4-3 victory over Utica College Saturday evening.

"It was great to bring home two wins this weekend", said Head Coach Kelly Kingsbury. "We grow a little bit each day we step on the field together and continue to learn to play to our strengths. We have some young players really stepping up and our veterans are rising to the occasion when we need them to."

The Inside Story
Utica got on the board first at 18:38 as Madeline Krecidlo cleaned up a loose ball in front for her first of the year.  Scaccia's initial shot was blocked, but Krecidlo was waiting just off the right post to bang in the rebound.

The Red Dragons responded with a pair of goals just 1:05 apart to take a 2-1 lead. Grace Bilow (Webster/Webster Thomas) put Oneonta on the board when she redirected a Colleen Geyer (West Nyack/Clarkstown South) shot into the back of the net. Cali Cortese (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) gave the Red Dragons the lead with her second maker of the season.

With less than a minute remaining in the half, Utica's Sydney Scaccia redirected a shot by Samantha Whitehouse that found the back of the net for her first of the year, knotting the game a 2-2 at the half.

Oneonta freshman Ally McCrudden (Red Hook/Red Hook) tallied her first collegiate goal on a pass from Emily Lutz (Carle Place/Carle Place) to give the Red Dragons a 3-2 advantage. Jessica Kehoe (Greene/Greene) increased the Oneonta lead to 4-2 with a tally from the top of the circle on a feed from Courtney Coffey (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley).

Utica made things interesting with a goal in the 46th minute, but the Red Dragons held their ground for the rest of the final quarter to hold on for the 4-3 victory.

Just the Stats
Oneonta held a slim 15-14 advantage in shots and a 10-8 margin in penalty corners. Oneonta goalie Kristy Campana (Melville/Walt Whitman) made seven saves in the victory.

What's Next
The Red Dragons return to action on Wednesday, September 4th when they head across the street to play Hartwick College at 5:00pm.
