Box Score Geneva, NY – SUNY Oneonta women's tennis played perennial regionally ranked William Smith College today and lost a closely contested dual 7-2. The Red Dragons matched William Smith stroke for stroke but the more experienced Herron's seemed to win the big points at the opportune times.
Doubles was very tight on all three-courts. In the top position Sophomore
Julieta Eulau (Oceanside/Oceanside) and senior
Alyssa Brault (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) got things off on the positive side for Oneonta showing their doubles chemistry and mastery of the duo from William Smith. Eulau and Brault jumped out to a 5-0 lead with the score not representing the quality of play being contested. With superior net skills the Red Dragon tandem never let their opponents into the match and closed out the match with an 8-1 convincing victory. Unfortunately for the Red Dragons doubles flights two and three did not go Oneonta's way with very competitive and spirited play on both courts. This left the Red Dragon women having to fight back down 2-1 after the doubles was contested.
In singles the number three Red Dragon sophomore
Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) played a tight match and split sets forcing a deciding super-tiebreaker with Lipscomb overpowering her opponent clinching the other Oneonta court win 6-1, 4-6 (10-7). In perhaps the match of the afternoon took place on court four as freshman
Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) won the first set with her tight consistent play 6-1. Her William Smith opponent went ahead in the second set 5-0 and somehow Fraser fought back and won the next six games to go up 6-5. With Fraser serving for the match she owned a match point but could not close out the set. The match was ultimately forced into a super-tiebreaker with Fraser on the short end losing a very compelling competition. The final score was 6-1, 6-7 (4-10). The loss gives The Red Dragons an overall record of 15-6 on the year dating back to the fall.
Next up for the SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team is a date with the always tough Rochester Institute of Technology. That match will take place next Saturday, March 30
th beginning at 2:30 PM at the Midtown Athletic Club in Rochester, NY.
