Edgewater, NJ – The perennial Skyline Conference Champions with four-consecutive appearances in the NCAA National Tournament lost to the SUNY Oneonta Men's Tennis Team in a thrilling contest in the Binghamton Tennis Center of Edgewater, NJ. The final tally was 6-3 in favor of the Red Dragons in a big program victory for Oneonta.
The match ensued with the doubles and in the number one position was senior junior
Marco Ammirati (Huntington/Huntington) and senior
Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) who dropped the first game of the match but went on to break the Yeshiva duo twice and the Red Dragon pair won 8 out of the next 11 games played. The other doubles win came from freshman John Clayton and freshman
Matthew Reinhold (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy). The pair teamed together for the first time as Red Dragons in a dual match but was very familiar with each other having also played on the same high school team advancing to their sectional championships. As Red Dragons they got to 1-0 by jumping to a 5-0 lead and dominating with superior net play on route to an 8-2 victory.
The singles stanza began with the Red Dragons holding a 2-1 advantage. Close matches in the top half of the lineup made for some great drama. Ammirati in the first flight went down in the first set with a break a serve against him but later made it up with two return service-breaks of his own. The first set went Ammirati's way and he then closed out his opponent 7-5, 6-2. Freshman
Dalton Capobianco (Daniel Island, SC/SC Connections Charter School) played a thrilling set in the third position having dropped the first set in a close tiebreaker. Capobianco kept his composure and was perfect in the second set and won easily and completed the third flight victory with a well-earned 6-7, 6-0 (10-7) triumph.
Fourth positioned singles player sophomore
Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) cruised on to 6-2, 6-1 win. Proving to be the clincher singles match was by junior
Alexander Reiley (Manorville/Eastport) who was dominant on route to his second singles win of the spring 2019 campaign as a 6-3, 6-1 score was tallied by the third year Red Dragon as the fifth seed. Noteworthy was the second singles player and captain Fox who lost at his position (6-0, 5-7 10-8) but playing some of the best tennis of his four year-career leading the Red Dragons to the team win.
The Red Dragons men's tennis team now prepares for their trip to Florida as they prepare for four-dual matches the first one being Monday, March 4
th at 8 AM at USTA - USTA National Campus, 10000 USTA, Orlando, Florida.
