Men's Tennis

Men’s tennis begins 2019 with resounding shutout of Elmira 9-0

Box Score Elmira, NY-  The men's tennis team came out of the gate to begin their 2019 campaign with an impressive shutout of Elmira College 9-0.

With almost a whole new lineup compared to the 2018 season The Red Dragons put only one senior out on the courts and toppled the competition in impressive fashion.  Beginning in the doubles junior Marco Ammirati (Huntington/Huntington) and senior/captain Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) lost only two-games on route to an 8-2 victory in the top flight.  Newcomer and freshman Dalton Capobianco (Daniel Island, SC/SC Connections Charter School) and sophomore Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) were perfect on-route to an 8-0 victory celebrating the first time this duo was paired in the second position .  Paired together at number three-doubles for the first time was sophomore Benjamin Cohen and freshman John Clayton and were also perfect shutting out their Elmira foes 8-0.

A 3-0 lead in tow for the Red Dragon men as singles started, Oneonta kept the Elmira squad completely off the scoreboard sweeping singles play.  Ammirati lost only three-games on route to a straight set 6-2, 6-1 triumph.  Fox was textbook routing his number two singles opponent in double bagel fashion 6-0, 6-0.  Capobianco jumped into the number three-singles position in his Red Dragon debut and celebrated a lopsided 6-1, 6-0 win.  Smith played today in the fourth position and was on the positive side of another double bagel win taking out his opponent 6-0, 6-0.  Reiley got a start today in the singles lineup and certainly did not disappoint in the fifth spot with yet another Red Dragon 6-0, 6-0 victory.  Anchoring the lineup today in the sixth spot was Clayton.  A case of nerves in the first set but Clayton recovered and won the first 6-2 and was perfect the rest of the way earning a 6-0 win in the second set securing the Red Dragon shutout to open the season.

The Red Dragons will try and upset the always tough St. Lawrence University Saints in their annual matchup taking place on the campus of St. Lawrence on Saturday, February 16th beginning at 12 noon.
