Women's Tennis cruises past Fredonia 8-1

Red Dragons now 4-1 overall in conference

Box Score Binghamton, NY - The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team took its 8-3 record to Binghamton today to face the 10-1 Fredonia Blue Devils and showed superiority on eight out of the nine courts contested.  Oneonta came out on top with an 8-1 victory moving them to 9-3 overall with a 4-1 conference record.  The loss for Fredonia drops them to 10-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play.  As a result of the win the Red Dragons move into second place in the conference and Fredonia hanging on for their playoff lives.

Doubles at the first seed started off tight but freshman Maxie Karen (New York, NY/The Clinton School) and junior Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) doubled up their opponents tallying an 8-4 victory.  At the third slot sophomores Giovanna Buccina (Syracuse/Westhill) and Madeline Carswell (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) were in command from the onset and cruised easily to an 8-1 win.

The two doubles victories allowed the Red Dragons to hold a 2-1 advantage going into singles competition.  Lipscomb disposed of her opponent quickly on route to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph.  The second seeded sophomore Olivia Fraser (Queensbury/Queensbury) was down 5-4 in the first set and shifted into another gear winning nine out of the next 10 games clinching an impressive 7-5, 6-1 win.  The third spot saw Carswell get through a first set overpowering her opponent 6-0.  In the second set it was tight for awhile but Carswell broke serve and it held up taking the second set 6-4 which also proved to be the clincher for the Red Dragons in the dual match.  Karen lost her first set in the fourth flight but also recovered churning out a 3-6, 6-2 (10-3) win.  In the fifth position sophomore Macdonald was absolutely dominant going 6-0, 6-2 on the winning side.  Finally Buccina starting today in the sixth singles position also played steady tennis closing out the Red Dragon afternoon with a 6-2, 6-2 conquest clinching a dominant 8-1 dual match performance.

A playoff berth is on the line for the Red Dragons with just 24 hours to rest as they take on the SUNY Brockport at the Binghamton Tennis Center in Binghamton, NY beginning at 3 PM on Saturday, October 5th.
