Men’s Tennis toppled at the hands of Hamilton College 7-2

Box Score Hamilton, NY – The New England Small College Athletic Conference traditionally provides some of the best men's tennis teams in the country and today SUNY Oneonta played one of its representatives the Hamilton College Continentals.  The Red Dragons played incredibly well but could not match the weapons and experience Hamilton College had and fell very respectfully 7-2.

The doubles stanza produced a number three flight winner for Oneonta as freshman Reiley Smith and Senior Cole Laffitte (East Setauket/Ward Melville) were aggressive and steady and got two breaks of serve in the match which help up. Smith and Laffite came home victors and held the Red Dragons close with an 8-5 win.

Down only 2-1 going into the doubles play the matches at the bottom of the lineup proved to be where the Red Dragons kept things interesting.  The highlight in singles was at number four where Laffitte won a tight first set 7-5 but lost the second set 0-6 forcing a super-tiebreaker which the senior won 11-9.  Another impressive matchup was at number six as Smith continues to electrify as a freshman.  Smith was up at one point 4-3, but was broken in the first set and he could never get that elusive break.  Smith needed a little more seasoning as the sixth singles player dropped a 6-0 decision in the second and ultimately the match.

The Red Dragon unfortunately fall to 5-8 on the season and now have to take on their rivals and always tough opponent from Union College on Tuesday, April 17th beginning at 4:30 on the campus of Union.
