Schenectady, NY - The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team put a revised roster on the courts for a non-traditional season match up versus Union College today and had to settle for an 8-1 setback.
Several notable highlights happened in the doubles stanza as the number two team of senior
Samantha Felice (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) and freshman
Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) lost a tight match 8-6. The pair were down at one point 6-3 and fought their way back getting to 7-6 but they could not win that elusive tying game. A similar fate for sophomore
Danielle Swierczyna (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) paired with freshman
Gianna Papini (Helwett/George W. Hewlett) who were actually up 4-3 at one point and then tied again at 6-6 but never won another game dropping the match 8-6.
A very difficult 3-0 deficit after doubles made it difficult to recover from. The highlight of the afternoon in singles was Swierczyna, who played a great first set in singles and won that easily 6-2 but lost a very close second set 7-5 and a super-tiebreaker was needed to decide the outcome, which Swierczyna won 10-7. The victory for Swierczyna was the lone triumph on the day for the Red Dragons.
The other notable match was at number three where junior
Michelle Halpern (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) battled in the first set into a tie-breaker but lost it 7-6 (4) and went down quietly in the second set 6-2.
The loss sent the Red Dragons back to Oneonta losing its third match in a row bringing its overall season record to 12-6. It does not get easier for the Red Dragon as they have over a week off before heading to Maryland to take on a strong Salisbury College squad on Saturday, April 21
st and Goucher College on April 22
nd. Each one of those matches takes place on their respective campuses.
