Box Score Rochester, NY – The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team coming off a thrilling win last week in Florida at the National Tennis Center in Orlando vs Trine University used some of that momentum and catapulted themselves to its second win in a row dropping the St. John Fisher Cardinals 8-1 in impressive fashion.
Doubles was a lopsided affair with The Red Dragons shutting out their opponents winning on all three flights. Number one doubles senior
Zach Lasky (Colonie/Colonie) and junior
Joseph D'Orazio (Smithtown/Smithtown) set back their opponents with dominating net play 8-3. Junior
Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) and his partner sophomore
Marco Ammirati (Huntington/Huntington) have not lost a match since being paired together and won easily 8-1. Freshman
Riley Smith (Westhampton Beach/Westhampton Beach) and senior
Cole Laffitte (East Setauket/Ward Melville) started off slowly but separated themselves from their opponents doubling up their foes 8-4.
With a commanding 3-0 lead after the doubles stanza, singles on courts 2-6 all came up with victories. Ammirati a straight set winner having to play long grinding points but won the important points needed to secure a 6-2, 6-4 triumph. Fox opened up his match strongly with a 6-0 first set and in the second set his opponent played to a higher level actually going up a break but Fox got the break back late when St. John was serving for the set and Fox then held and broke again to secure victory 6-0, 7-5. Lasky at number four was completely dominant winning 6-2, 6-0. Laffitte played two close sets but was the superior player winning the pivotal points and outlasted his opponent 6-4, 6-4. The highlight of the day was number six senior
James Garzia (Marcellus/Marcellus) getting a rare start coming off the bench. Garzia had a case of nerves and dropped the first set. After he settled down Garzia was much more consistent and dominated his opponent the rest of the way earning an emotional win 3-6, 6-1 (10-4).
The Red Dragons men's tennis team, now mid-way through its spring season sitting at 4-5, will have two weeks to rest and recharge for its second half of the season which will see them play 12 matches over the course of 28 days. The first match in that series is Saturday, March 31
st with a home match v RIT beginning at 1 PM at the Heissan Tennis Courts on the campus of SUNY Oneonta.
