Oneonta, NY. The SUNY Oneonta field hockey drops a midafternoon matchup to Kean University, 3-2. The Cougars improved to 4-0 on the season as the Red Dragons fall to 2-2.
The Red Dragons opened up the scoring early with a goal off the stick of senior
Nicole Johnston (Bedford Village/Fox Lane) just 3:15 into the game. The goal was scored from about 15 yards out on the left side of the circle. Johnston beat the goalie and pocketed the ball in the back of the cage.
In the 19
th minute the Cougars knotted the game at one, as Jenna Patrone netted a goal from the right side of the circle off of a pass from Lia DiPiazza. The Cougars took the lead, 2-1 in the 29
th minute when Shauna LaMaina dribbled into the middle of the circle and beat the goalie with a power shot.
At the half the Cougars held a 2-1 lead, but had an advantage in shots 13-2 and penalty corners 7-2. The Red Dragon defense played superb, sophomore
Danell Jones (Whitney Point/Whitney Point) had three saves and Johnston added her first defensive save of the season.
In the second period the Cougars expanded their lead to two goals as Kayla Molnar dribble past a defender and put the ball in the back of the cage.
The Red Dragons senior
Sierra Palmatier (Nineveh/Afton Central) had an answer to that goal scoring less than two minutes after the Kean goal to bring the lead back down to one, 3-2. Palmatier's goal was scored after dribbling past multiple defenders, to get to the middle of the circle where she lifted the ball to beat the goalie.
The game ended on a last ditch effort as the Red Dragons paced down the field and earned a penalty corner as time expired. The Red Dragons off the penalty corner were unable to get a shot on goal before the Cougars cleared the ball to end the game.
Jones finished the game with seven saves and fell to 1-2 on the season. Bailee Mullen earned the win and improved her season record to 4-0.
The Red Dragons are back in action in a mid-week matchup against the Wells Express on Wednesday, September 15
