Men's tennis defeats Baruch 7-2 in opening dual match of 2017-18

Red Dragons defeat defending CUNY conference champions

Box Score Flushing Meadow, NY - The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team got their 2017-18 season off in the right direction on Friday with a decisive win over the defending CUNY Champs Baruch College by a score of 7-2.  The Red Dragons men's tennis team played several tournaments the previous two weekends demonstrating the incredible depth the squad has.  In their first dual match of the year the SUNY Oneonta's men's tennis team demonstrated that depth with an overwhelming win at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadow, NY where just three weeks earlier Rafael Nadal won the US Open Championships.

In doubles play, freshmen Tyler Nierman (Dix Hills) making his debut in a dual match joined forced with veteran junior Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) and came away with an impressive win at number one doubles scoring an 8-5 triumph.  At the second flight sophomore Marco Ammirati (Huntington/Huntington) and senior Zach Lasky (Latham/Colonie) rejoined as partners for the second year in a row continued their winning ways from the previous season and scored an impressive 8-3 win.  The number three tandem of senior Tim Distler and Cole Laffitte (East Setauket/Ward Melville) were perfect in their opening match of the year winning 8-0.

In singles and a 3-0 lead in tact after doubles play the Red Dragons were locked in several tight matches as Fox played number one singles today jumping up five positions from last year's sixth spot and was very impressive although losing 6-3, 6-2.  Ammirati who was primarily a doubles player the year prior also jumped up to the second position and played very impressive tennis but had to settle for a 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), (10-3) loss.  The remainder of the Red Dragon men had little trouble closing out Baruch College.  Lasky, Laffitte, Distler all secured straight set wins in the numbers three-five flights.  Senior Andrew Reiley (Manorville/Eastport) coming back from an injury plagued season got back in the lineup at the number six position and was practically perfect dominating his opponent in a 6-1, 6-0 win.

The Red Dragons are now scheduled to play Division 1 Hofstar University on Saturday, October 14th beginning at 3 PM on the campus of Hofstra before closing the fall season down in preparation for another challenging spring campaign.
