Oneonta, NY. The SUNY Oneonta Field Hockey team collected their first win of the season as they beat the St. Lawrence Saints, 2-0. The Red Dragons leveled their record at 1-1, as the Saints dropped to 0-2 on the season.
The first half of the match favored the Red Dragons offense with nine shots compared to the Saints two. The score remained tied at zero going into the break, with the Red Dragons having a slight edge on the Saints in corners, 4-3.
The Red Dragons offense struck twice in the second half of the match. The first goal came in the 37
th minute off of the stick of junior
Allyson Bilow (Webster/Webster Thomas). Bilow beat the St. Lawrence goalie on the right side for her first goal of the season. On the play junior
Allyson Wells (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) assisted Bilow with a feed from the middle of the circle.
The second goal came 15 minutes later when Bilow found junior
Carissa Warren (Harpursville/Harpursville) who passed the ball to senior
Natalie Longo (Endwell/Maine Endwell) who beat the goaltender with a bouncing shot to her right side. Â This gave the Red Dragons a 2-0 lead.
The Red Dragons defense held strong and recorded their first shutout of the season. The defense was anchored by strong play from both senior
Maggie Vachris (Setauket/Ward Melville) and junior goaltender
Carly Olsen (Miller Place/Miller Place). The defense only allowed three shots, and of those three shots only one shot was on goal. Olsen collected her first win and shutout of the season to improve to 1-0.
The Red Dragons are back in action on the road against city-rival Hartwick College at 4:00pm next Wednesday, September 6
