Field Hockey comes from behind to beat Catskill Cup rival New Paltz

Junior Allyson Wells adds three points to her season total

New Paltz, NY. The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team beat Catskill Cup rival New Paltz, 4-1, to move to 3-0 in the SUNYAC. The Red Dragons improved to 7-2 overall and the Hawks dropped to 4-5 overall and 3-1 in the SUNYAC. In the come from behind victory junior Allyson Wells (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) had three points (1g, 1a).

The Red Dragons found themselves in a one goal deficit just under 20 minutes into the game. The Hawks Justine O'Reilly found the back of the cage in the 19th minute to give New Paltz a 1-0 lead.

The Oneonta offense answered the call shortly after in the 26th minute when Wells scored her fifth goal of the season off of a deflected shot by senior Sierra Palmatier (Nineveh/Afton Central) to knot the game at 1-1. Five minutes later in the same period freshman Colleen Geyer (West Nyack/Clarkstown South) scored what would be the game winning goal. On the play she was assisted by both Nicole Johnston (Bedford Village/Fox Lane) and Allyson Bilow (Webster/Webster Thomas).

Going into the half with a one goal lead (2-1), the Red Dragons and Hawks both had 10 shots and six saves. The advantage in penalty corners went to the Hawks 6-2.  

In the second period, senior Natalie Longo (Endwell/Maine Endwell) added an insurance goal in the 52nd minute to bring the Red Dragons advantage to two (3-1). The last goal of the match came off the stick of freshman Grace Bilow (Webster/Webster Thomas) in the 63rd minute. On the play she was assisted by Palmatier, her fifth assist of the year.

Sophomore Danell Jones (Whitney Point/Whitney Point) recorded 11 saves enroute to her fifth straight win to improve to 6-2 on the season and 3-0 in the SUNYAC.

The Red Dragons are back in action against Keuka College at home on All College Field at 1PM on Saturday, September 30th.
