Alfred, NY – With a revitalized roster and three freshmen in the starting lineup the Red Dragon women's tennis team opened up the season in a resounding way downing the Alfred University Saxon's 9-0.
Doubles play began the afternoon's dual match with the Red Dragon's putting a rookie in at number one doubles with freshman
Julieta Eulau (Oceanside/Oceanside) teaming with junior
Alyssa Brault (Rochester/Churchville-Chili). The pair took little time to dismantle their opponents after being down 2-1 and then ran off seven out of the next eight games and secured the win. Senior captain
Samantha Felice (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) was also teamed with rookie freshman
Mya Lipscomb () and the duo got the season off to a great beginning winning 8-4. Finally sophomore
Danielle Swierczyna (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) was also partnered with a rookie freshman
Emma Messenger (Marlboro/Marlboro) and overwhelmed their foes shutting them out 8-0 making it a clean sweep in the doubles stanza with freshmen on each court.
Up 3-0 going into singles play the Red Dragons kept on the winning track as Brault never let her opponent settle into any groove and won easily 6-1, 6-0 at the number one position. Eulau opened her Red Dragon singles debut today in the number two position with a nicely competed 6-2, 6-3 win. Junior
Michelle Halpern (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) playing back at her normal three spot was dominant with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Lipscomb also making her singles debut today in the fourth spot had little trouble earning a 6-1, 6-1 win. Felice played a flawless first set winning 6-0 and then her opponent made things a bit tighter in the second but the Red Dragon captain held her off winning the second set 6-4. The days highlight came from freshmen
Emma Messenger (Marlboro/Marlboro) who had the premier day jitters and dropped the first set of her match at the sixth position 6-4. Messenger was down 5-2 in the second set but finally settled down and ran off the next five games to secure the set. The tiebreaker because of darkness was shortened to 7 and after Messenger fell down 5-2 in the decider she ran off the next five points to secure her first singles victory of her career. A sigh of relief came from Messenger after the victory with her teammates hugging her after an incredible opening day Red Dragon win.
