Doubles play was an exciting affair as the number one team of senior
Michael Nelson (Manhasset/Manhasset) and sophomore
Joseph D'Orazio (Smithtown/Smithtown) were totally in sync today and took down the number one team from Hobart breaking serve to win the match 8-6. On court number three junior
Zach Lasky (Latham/Colonie) and freshmen
Marco Ammirati (Huntington/Huntington) were very impressive playing against this high ranking opponent and lost by only one break of serve 8-6.
At the start of singles play the Red Dragons were down by only 2-1 and were certainly in striking distance to pull off the upset. However, the Hobart Statesmen proved why they are a high ranking team and scored straight set victories at the number two, three, four and sixth positions. Impressive today though was Nelson who at number one singles took a set from his opponent and the match had to be decided by a super-tiebreaker. Nelson was up 8-4 in the super breaker needing only two more points to secure the match. Those points remained elusive and Nelson had to settle for a tight match loss 3-6, 6-3 (8-10). In the fifth position Lasky owned a set point in the first set but could not convert. He was drawn into a tiebreaker and dropped the breaker 7-3. The second set Lasky could not muster any momentum and settled for 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 loss.
The Red Dragons have played some of the best competition in Division III this season playing great tennis. The Red Dragons look to rebound on Sunday at RIT beginning at 1 PM.
