Men’s tennis overwhelms Union College 7-2

Red Dragons stop four-match losing skid

Box Score Oneonta, NY   – SUNY Oneonta men's tennis has been on the road with nine consecutive matches and finally returned home for a match against Union College.  A little home cooking for the Red Dragons certainly did not hurt and the Red Dragons shrugged off a four-match losing streak and handed Union College a 7-2 setback.
The doubles portion of the match saw the number two team of sophomore Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) and junior Tim Distler dominate and won handily 8-1.  Number three doubles was very competitive as junior Zach Lasky (Latham/Colonie) and freshman Marco Ammirati (Huntington/Huntington) found another way to win a match.  The duo has been very successful and just seems to win the big points at the right time.  This time they jumped out to a 3-0 lead only to see their opponents come back and ultimately take a 6-5 lead.  Trading serves the match went into a tiebreaker and yet again the Red Dragon pair won the match on pressure points with Ammirati winning the last point with a big overhead winner.

2-1 in the Red Dragons favor going into singles and this time Oneonta took care of their business and won five out of the six singles matches contested.   Senior Michael Nelson (Manhasset/Manhasset) was in command the whole way and cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 triumph.  Sophomore Joseph D'Orazio (Smithtown/Smithtown) for the second straight match lost the first set and grinded out a win in the second set and found that extra gear as he ran away with a decisive third set with a total score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.  Sophomore Michael DeNigris had been struggling of late but got a huge win today at number three securing a 6-2, 6-0 win.  DeNigris's victory proved to be the dual match clincher for the Red Dragons.  Junior Cole Laffite had little trouble dismantling his opponent at the fourth position clinching a 6-1, 6-3 win.  Lasky got his second win on the day as he dominated in the first set and then was pushed a bit in the second set as he captured a 6-0, 6-3 triumph.

A much needed win for the Red Dragons and now they set their sights on the SUNY Farmingdale Rams for a match to be played on Saturday, April 15th beginning at 11 AM on the campus of Farmingdale.
