Men’s Tennis back on winning track, overwhelm St. John Fisher 8-1

Red Dragons gain second win of the spring

Box Score Pittsford, NY – The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team lost two heartbreakers in the previous two matches, but tonight the Red Dragons found its rhythm from the get go and overwhelmed the St. John Fisher Cardinals 8-1.

Doubles play saw the No. 1 team of senior Michael Nelson (Manhasset/Manhasset) and sophomore Joseph D'Orazio (Smithtown/Smithtown) drop the opening game of the match before running off eight of the next 10 games to easily defeat their foes with superior serving and net play by the score of 8-3.  The No. 2 duo of sophomore Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) and junior Timothy Distler (Amityville/St. John the Baptist) are working hard to develop a good chemistry after joining together for the first time as team earlier this spring.  The pair worked on a few strategic adjustments and doubled up their opponents for an 8-4 triumph.  At No. 3 doubles, freshman Marco Ammirati (Huntington/Huntington) and junior Zach Lasky (Latham/Colonie) won their second match in row but ran into a little trouble.  The tandem were up 7-1 but that lead gradually evaporated after they were broken three times in a row and the Cardinals pair got the Red Dragons into a tiebreaker.  However, the Oneonta duo composed themselves and were never threatened in the breaker and won it 7-2 and the match 8-7.  That win secured a 3-0 lead after the doubles stanza.

Singles play saw No. 2 D'Orazio, No. 3 sophomore Michael DeNigris,No. 4 in the lineup junior Cole Laffitte (East Setauket/Ward Melville), No. 5 Lasky and No. 6 Fox all come up with lopsided victories securing an 8-1 team triumph for the Red Dragons.  Laffitte's victory at the fourth flight proved to be the clincher for Oneonta.  The only scare came at number five singles when Lasky found himself in a tight first set being down 3-4 but ran off the next four out of five game to secure the set 7-5.  Lasky blanked his opponent in the second set 6-0 to win his fourth consecutive singles match.

A good win for the Red Dragons after a long spring break.  This victory gets them prepared for the Goucher College on Saturday, March 25th at their campus beginning at 3 PM. On that same day there is a split squad match as Oneonta plays Staten Island at their campus beginning at 1 PM.
