Box Score Schenectady, NY – One year ago Union College closed out the season in Oneonta defeating the Red Dragons 5-4. With a revamped squad of freshmen recruits, the Red Dragons avenged this loss with a 9-0 shutout of the Dutchmen. The latest victory for the Red Dragons pushed its current winning streak to 11 matches with two remaining in the season.
Doubles play was a one-sided affair as freshman
Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) and junior
Michael Nelson (Manhasset/Manhasset) got back on the winning track winning 8-5. Union College kept the match close but the Red Dragon's number one doubles team broke serve and closed out the hard hitting affair. Freshmen
Joseph D'Orazio (Smithtown/Smithtown) and
Andrew Emanuel (Rye/Rye) were totally dominant in the second position and were never threatened at any time during the competition as they won their match 8-1 making it eight in a row for the tandem. Senior
Joseph Morris (Bainbridge/Sidney Senior High School) playing his last road match of his career again teamed with sophomore
Timmy Distler (Amityville/St. John the Baptist) and won their battle 8-3 as Morris closed out the match on his serve. The duo since being paired together have an impressive 8-3 record in the spring with a five match winning streak. The Red Dragon's closed out the doubles portion of the contest with a comfortable 3-0 lead heading into singles competition.
Nelson walked on the court as the number one player with a two match losing streak that ended today as he got back in the win column gaining a 6-3, 6-2 victory over his hard serving opponent. Second singles player D'Orazio was completely forceful imposing a 6-0, 6-1 victory.Â
The Red Dragon athlete of the prior week went to
Andrew Emanuel (Rye/Rye) and he showed why today in his 6-1, 6-2 drubbing over his Dutchman adversary making it his 11
th singles victory in the spring against only one defeat back in February now making it 10 wins in a row. Fourth singles player, sophomore
Cole Laffitte (East Setauket/Ward Melville), was his reliable self today gaining a 6-2, 6-3 triumph riding a five match winning streak of his own. Fifth singles player, sophomore
Zach Lasky (Colonie/Colonie), has now won six consecutive matches having also just won an athlete of the week award. Today he put in another dominant performance overriding his opponent 6-1, 6-1. During this winning streak Lasky has only lost a total of nine games as he continues to control his opponents. Senior
Damien Prohaska (Binghamton/Binghamton High School), also playing the final road match of his career, quietly has won six matches in a row playing his usual steady grinding style of tennis winning today 6-2, 6-2. Prohaska was the last one off the court and his match victory secured the 9-0 shutout of Union College on the last road match of the year for the Red Dragon men.
The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team host Bard College at home Friday, April 29
th at the Heissan Tennis Courts beginning at 3:45 pm on the campus of SUNY Oneonta.
