Box Score 2 Norton, MA/Oneonta, NY – The Red Dragon's men's tennis squad scored two victories on the same day in a split squad effort. The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team sent their regular first string travel squad to take on a very formidable foe in Wheaton College from Norton, MA. While the non-travel squad stayed in Oneonta and took on their SUNY Delhi neighbors.
The Red Dragons scored victories in each contest with an intense match vs Wheaton which saw Oneonta topple their adversary 8-1. Meanwhile in Oneonta the second team scored a resounding lopsided win against SUNY Delhi by the score of 9-0.
Against Wheaton freshman
Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) and junior
Michael Nelson (Manhasset/Manhasset) were again dominant in pushing back their opponents at number one doubles scoring an 8-2 triumph making it eight wins out of their last nine. Freshmen
Joseph D'Orazio (Smithtown/Smithtown) and
Andrew Emanuel (Rye/Rye) also took out their opponents breaking serve late in the match and outlasted their opponents by the score of 8-6 making their yearly record as doubles tandem 12-4. The highlight of doubles play was senior
Joseph Morris (Bainbridge/Sidney Senior High School) and sophomore
Cole Laffitte (East Setauket/Ward Melville) reuniting as a team for today's match and got off to a slow start and went down two breaks finding themselves trailing 0-4. However, after a quick break of serve and a hold the match tightened up and ultimately the duo found their rhythm and broke serve yet again and won 8 of the last 10 games completing a mountainous comeback clinching an 8-6 victory.
The Wheaton singles matches began with the Red Dragons already up 3-0 after doubles play. The expected high energy of Wheaton College never materialized and they quietly succumbed to the Red Dragon men as Oneonta won five of the six singles matches contested. All matches except for number one singles was won in straight sets and when sophomore
Zach Lasky (Colonie/Colonie) walked off the court at fifth singles with a another lopsided win with a 6-1, 6-0 score that proved to be the clincher for the Red Dragon men.
Meanwhile back in Oneonta the Red Dragon's second team had no trouble clinching victory against SUNY Delhi. Sophomore Timothy Distler a mainstay on the travel squad today stayed in Oneonta and anchored the home team and with his freshman partner Michael Denigris scored an 8-4 win at first doubles. Freshman
Jordan Diamond (Mt. Sinai/Mt. Sinai) teamed with sophomore
Ross Binder (Merrick/JFK Bellmore) struggled at the beginning but came out on top 8-6 in second doubles. Freshman
Samuel Wolfe (New City/Lincoln) teamed with sophomore
Christopher Rothman (Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Regional) at the third position and shutout their foes 8-0 allowing the Red Dragon men to secure a 3-0 lead going into the singles play.
Singles play was equally dominant for the Red Dragon men and each team member scored straight set victories clinching the 9-0 shutout of SUNY Delhi.
The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team hosts their first home match of the spring season as the RIT Tigers come calling. The action gets started at 1 PM at the Heissan Tennis courts on the campus of SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, April 23
