Box Score Queens, NY – A 5am wakeup call and four hour drive to Queens, NY was used as motivation to avenge a loss a year ago to the Hunter College Hawks, as the SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team won today by a lopsided score of 7-2 making it five wins in a row.
After a two week layoff, the Red Dragons got right back to its winning ways and shutout the Hawks in doubles play. Freshman
Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) and junior
Michael Nelson (Manhasset/Manhasset) now have made it six wins in row triumphing today by a score of 8-6. The duo broke serve early in the match and it held up as the team simply compliments each other with Fox's reliable return of serve and Nelson's great net play.
Freshmen
Joseph D'Orazio (Smithtown/Smithtown) and
Andrew Emanuel (Rye/Rye) have a three match winning streak of their won at the number two position and were completely dominant taking down their Hunter College opponents 8-1. Senior
Joseph Morris (Bainbridge/Sidney Senior High School) and sophomore Timothy Distler were never threatened and were also victorious at number three doubles 8-2. Distler and Morris have jelled as a newly formed doubles tandem this spring and now have won for the third time together.
Singles play today was highlighted by the third singles match with Emanuel trading blows with his Hunter opponent, as both players forced each other to play their best tennis. Emanuel found himself down 1-4 and fought back to take the tiebreaker that propelled him to win the match 7-6, 6-3. Emanuel, playing his usual emotional tennis, used all off court distractions as fuel and motivation and turned up the heat taking 12 out of the last 17 games to clinch an emotional victory.
Sophomores
Cole Laffitte (East Setauket/Ward Melville) and
Zach Lasky (Colonie/Colonie) along with senior
Damien Prohaska (Binghamton/Binghamton High School) won at the fourth, fifth and sixth spots respectfully losing just one game.
The men's tennis team goes back on the road again next week again to the Metropolitan New York area to play The College of Staten Island on Saturday, April 16
th beginning at 1 PM.
