Box Score Pittsford, NY – A week after returning from their annual spring road trip to Florida the SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team picked up its third win in a row defeating the St. John Fisher Cardinals 8-1.
The Red Dragons were never in any trouble as they shutout the Cardinals 3-0 when doubles play concluded. Junior
Michael Nelson (Manhasset/Manhasset) and freshman
Nicholas Fox (Commack/Commack) picked up their fourth win in a row with an 8-6 triumph at the number one position. They got the early service break and it held up with the usual big serves of Nelson and Fox's complimentary net play and huge service returns.
Freshmen
Joseph D'Orazio (Smithtown/Smithtown) and
Andrew Emanuel (Rye/Rye) recovered from a slow start and got the break they needed at 4-4 and never lost another game closing out its match at second doubles 8-4.
Senior
Joseph Morris (Bainbridge/Sidney Senior High School) and sophomore
Timmy Distler (Amityville/St. John the Baptist) were never threatened and, in routine fashion, played clean tennis and secured their second win in a row helping the Red Dragons sweep the doubles.
Having secured the 3-0 lead going into singles, the Red Dragons kept the Cardinals completely at bay taking five out of the six singles courts. The only hiccup was D'Orazio having to retire midway through the second set as he was trying to grind out the contest suffering a stomach muscle pull early in the doubles match.
The rest of the Red Dragon men never got into any trouble. Nelson was overwhelming with a 6-0, 6-3 win at the number one position. Emanuel never let his opponent any comfort and completely shut out his challenger 6-0, 6-0 with big serves, crafty net play and reliable ground strokes. Sophomore
Cole Laffitte (East Setauket/Ward Melville) emerged out of his early season slump and got back to his freshman year MVP winning form and dismantled his opponent 6-2, 6-2. At fifth and sixth singles respectfully, senior
Damien Prohaska (Binghamton/Binghamton High School) stayed steady throughout closing out his opponent 6-3, 6-3 while sophomore
Zach Lasky (Colonie/Colonie) yet again anchored the team earning his fourth victory in a row 6-0, 6-4. Lasky continues to be reliable and relentless piling up victories at that sixth spot.
The men will now prepare for an encounter with Hamilton College beginning at 10 AM on Saturday, March 26
th at their campus. The Red Dragon's hope to avenge a loss to Hamilton when they were narrowly defeated 4-5 back in September.
