Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey falls short in battle of Red Dragons

Field Hockey

The Oneonta Red Dragons took on the Cortland Red Dragons on All College Field today. Cortland would take the match 3-0 but Oneonta would have a couple opportunities that almost gave Cortland a scare.

The game started with fair weather with sunny skies but would have to be finished under the lights with about a 20 degree difference in temperature. Cortland would come out early and put the pressure on Oneonta when senior captain Gabby Stein would find the back of the net in a scramble in front of the Oneonta goal less than two minutes into the game.

A little before 10 minutes, sophomore Allyson Wells (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) would almost hit the equalizer in for Oneonta but Meg Redmond would bail out her goaltender with a stick save to stop Oneonta. Shortly after that the Cortland Red Dragons Jessica Welsh would stroke a ball from the top of the circle to beat the Oneonta goaltender for a 2-0 advantage.

Oneonta would have another chance at a goal off the stick of Sierra Palmatier (Nineveh/Afton Central), but Cortland's Kendall Allmendinger would lay out to get in front of the goal.
Cortland would add one more goal to their total in the first half and that would end the scoring for the day for both teams.

Tomorrow Oneonta takes on the Oswego Lakers; the winner of the match will take the final slot (fourth seed) for this year's SUNYAC tournament. The game will start at 1:00pm on All College Field.
