Field Hockey beats St Lawrence 5-3

Freshman Allyson Wells scores three goals to lead Red Dragons

Freshman Allyson Wells (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) scored her first three collegiate goals yesterday in leading the SUNY Oneonta field hockey team to its first victory of the season against St. Lawrence 5-3.

With the score tied at three apiece, sophomore Casey Stata (Round Lake/Shenendehowa) put Oneonta (1-2) ahead for good in the 49th minute off a redirect of an Emily Beck (Hurley/Kingston) shot before Wells scored her final goal less than five minutes later for the margin of victory.

Although Oneonta got off to a slow start, falling behind 1-0 early in the game, they came back strong with three unanswered goals including two by Wells.  Oneonta's third goal of the first half came from sophomore Madeline Reilly (Pittsford/Pittsford Mendon) in the 34th minute when she tipped in a shot by senior Hannah Hayward (Glens Falls/Glens Falls).

Wells tied the game at one apiece in the 16th minute as she drove past a defender and tucked the ball inside the post at 15:32. Wells then put the Dragons out in front of the Saints at 28:05, when she scored from Hayward, off a penalty corner.

Senior Krista Servedio (Shrub Oak/Lakeland) had nine saves for the Red Dragons, as she collected her first win for the year.  Freshman Carissa Warren (Harpursville /Harpursville) also added a defensive save for the Red Dragons.
Oneonta's next game is at Hartwick on Wednesday beginning at 4pm,
