Box Score The SUNY Oneonta men's tennis team had its home opener of the 2015-16 campaign today vs. the Hamilton College Continentals. The Red Dragons had less than 24 hours to recover from its loss the day before at Wilkes University. The men's tennis team almost pulled off an epic upset over an unsuspecting opponent who easily beat the Red Dragons last year twice. Not this day though.
The Red Dragons went up 2-1 after the doubles competition when senior Mathew Richards and sophomore Michael Nelson (Manhasset) pulled off the first upset of the afternoon winning comfortably 8-3. The number three doubles team of freshman Joseph D'Orazio (Smithtown/Smithtown) and freshman Andrew Emanuel (Rye) got their first win as a doubles team for the Red Dragons also winning comfortably 8-2.
With the Red Dragons up going into the singles, Nelson won his match at the number one position 6-3, 3-0 (ret) helping to gain a 3-1 lead in match play. D'orazio then came out ahead in his match at number two singles winning in dramatic fashion with a score of 6-1, 2-6 (10-4) making it 4-1 for the Red Dragons. However that elusive fifth and clinching match point would never come as the Continentals won the final three matches of the day to squeeze out the victory.The Red Dragons will head to Connecticut College in New London, CT for a tournament on Saturday, September 19th beginning at 10 AM. This event will be followed by another tournament on Sunday, September 20th at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA beginning at 9 AM.
