Men's soccer captures 2014 Mayor's Cup title

Red Dragons shutout Babson 4-0

Box Score The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team scored a pair of early goals and cruised the rest of the way, as they defeated Babson College, 4-0, to take the 2014 Mayor's Cup tournament title.  For the Red Dragons it was its second Mayor's Cup title and first since 2009.  Oneonta is off to a 3-0 start on the season.

Junior Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) got things rolling in the seventh minute when he gave Oneonta a 1-0 lead.  Sutherland was able to work himself by a Babson defender and put a shot along the ground that passed by the keeper and caught the inside of the right post and rolled to the back of the goal.  Sutherland's performance this weekend earned him the Jim Lennox Offensive MVP Award.

The Garth Stam Defensive MVP Award went to junior Jared Van Brunt (Sayville/Sayville).  Senior Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro), and juniors Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury), Matthew Matteo (Millerton/Webutuck) and Greg Silvestro (West Sayville/Connetquot) were all selected to the All-Tournament Team.

The Red Dragons made it 2-0 in the 20th minute when Williams was able to get his head on a service from Silvestro on a corner kick.  Williams' header caught the lower inside part of the cross bar and deflected down over the goal line.

Senior Addison Straub (Manlius/Fayetteville Manlius) scored his first goal of the season in the 51st minute when he redirected a crossing pass from junior Colin Volpe (Commack/St. Anthony's).

Oneonta added its final goal in the 87th minute when junior Sean Vinberg (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) converted a header on a corner kick from a service by Cain.

Senior keeper, Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin), made one save today in recording his third straight shutout for Oneonta.

The Red Dragons doubled up Babson in shots, 16-8 while holding a decided, 9-1, advantage in corner kicks.

Oneonta will play its first road game of 2014 this Tuesday when they travel to Elmira beginning at 4pm.
